The Key to House History

Researching the history of a house can reveal fascinating and unexpected stories about the past; stories of the people who lived there, the evolution of architectural features and details, the land and locality, and, occasionally, surprising connections with wider historic events.

A carefully researched house history can deepen the pleasure of living in your home, make a thoughtful and personal gift for friends or family, enhance a property’s appeal to prospective buyers, or simply satisfy your curiosity as a homeowner or custodian.

By examining evidence you already hold, alongside the fabric of the house itself (and any significant outbuildings or farm buildings), before tracing surviving archival records held elsewhere, it is possible to piece together the unique story of your home.

As Unique as your Home

The sources available for a house history will vary depending on the age and nature of the property. These might include local histories and recollections; historic maps; census records and electoral registers; parish registers; street and trade directories; newspaper cuttings; old postcards and photographs (where they survive); national surveys such as the National Farm Survey or Valuation Office Survey; tax and rates records; wills; title deeds; manorial records; court rolls, and more.

What survives will inevitably shape the final history. It may encompass earlier use of the site, changes to the building over time, the social history of the surrounding area, and the names and stories of former owners and occupants, as well as any links to relevant historic events. Where suitable material can be found and usage rights secured, the history may also include a visual element through maps, plans, photographs, or postcards.

The finished history can be presented in a range of formats: a timeline, a concise text report, an illustrated report, or a bespoke bound book. Costs vary depending on format and scope, with the level of finish tailored to each client’s preferences. I can also provide tailored support to help you explore and interpret your own archival treasures or family documents, bringing your home’s past vividly to life.
